Thirty-One Days of Beauty

If opinions were formed solely based upon the news media it would appear that we are surrounded by ugliness, greed and despair. Sadly, I fear many do form their opinions based upon only what they hear.

I choose not to live that way; surrounded by negativity, filled with anxiety, consumed in fear and seeing no hope for a better future. As I have shared previously, one of my favorite scriptures is found in Phillipians 4:8.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.

So, in the spirit of looking for those things lovely, excellent and praiseworthy; I’m sharing a piece I discovered in one of my old journals. There isn’t a date attached to it but given the nature of some of the wording, I’m betting it was in the fall of the year. As we journey toward Easter let us search for the beauty each day. It will not be hard to find.

Day 1               Corkscrew ginger curls

Day 2               The gap from the loss of the first baby tooth

Day 3               Work-worn leathered hands

Day 4               Feet that bring you good news

Day 5                Eyes as they light up with recognition

Day 6               Cafe Au Lait skin

Day 7               Legs that wobble in first steps: whether baby or rehab or age

Day 8               Winesap apples ripening on the tree

Day 9               Hummingbirds that fiercely protect their territory

Day 10              Kitchen full of friends and family

Day 11               Silvered hair of wisdom and years

Day 12              Timid smiles through braces

Day 13               Story-time with a child

Day 14              Baked goods shared in love

Day 15               Eyes aglow from serving another

Day 16               Faded and tattered Mickey Mouse rediscovered

Day 17               Fog hovering over the pasture just after dawn

Day 18               Unique and original color combinations of fall

Day 19               Freckles

Day 20              Sound of a child’s first solo

Day 21               Perfect rosebud lips covered with chocolate

Day 22               Smile of anyone and everyone

Day 23               Meal prepared together

Day 24              Sound of my hubby’s breathing as he sleeps

Day 25               View from my porches

Day 26              Grandchild that effortlessly falls asleep during the drive home

Day 27              Receiving a new or deeper spiritual insight

Day 28              Homemade cinnamon rolls

Day 29             Treasures from the pockets of a 6 year old boy

Day 30             Spouse

Day 31             Generations worshiping together

Begin today. Be intentional and look for thing of real beauty. Enduring beauty. Do not be overwhelmed by negativity. We have a hope that is lasting. A hope that is enduring. A hope that brings us peace; his name is Jesus.

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

  1. Thanks for the timely reminder of all the wonderful things around us! We must always be on guard for a spirit of fear and remember who is its author. Our God is in control and If we look to Him and purpose to spend quality time with Him He will bring peace to our lives.
